WHAT IS THE TRIPLE P OF DISASTER RECOVERY?
Recovering from a Disaster
An informational presentation given to a group of parents who have experienced a disaster. The seminar aims to help parents understand children’s social and emotional reactions to disasters, how to support children’s resilience: How to encourage them to resolve their distress naturally, respond to their children’s needs, and welcome their questions about what happened and what might happen in the future.
The seminar lasts approximately 90 minutes, followed by a 30-minute question period.
Who is this seminar for?
Parents or guardians, with children up to 12 years old or adolescents, who have experienced a natural disaster.
This Triple P is intended as an informational support and not as a treatment for excessive traumatic reactions, although some people may benefit from attending these seminars as an opportunity to access additional support.
What are the topics covered?
• Common social and emotional reactions of children following a disaster.
• Why some children are more affected than others.
• Parenting pitfalls.
• Managing children’s emotions.
• Answering children’s questions.
